Partnerships for Child Nutrition in Maharashtra

In its efforts to strengthen the ICDS, SIG has worked with the Bhavishya Alliance. The Bhavishya Alliance is a partnership between government, companies and NGOs to collectively address the issue of child undernutrition in 5 tribal districts of Maharashtra – Amravati, Nandurbar, Thane, Nashik and Gadhchiroli. Working within this framework, ICCHN has initiated work in the Melghat region of Amravati district – the two predominantly tribal blocks of Dharni and Chikaldhara. The Rajmata Jijau Mother-Child Health and Nutrition Mission in Maharashtra headed by Mr. V. Ramani, the Government of Maharashtra and the local civil society groups are close partners in this effort.

Strengthening and converging ICDS and Health training systems in Maharashtra is the key areas identified for intervention. The main interventions would include the following:

  • Creating guidelines for appropriate selection and training of ASHAs.

  • Reviewing, revising and developing training curriculum for all levels of functionaries within the NRHM – including the ASHA.

  • Visioning the training system required for implementing the required training and for providing continuous supportive supervision to the health workers.

  • Building a cadre of trainers from resources available at the block and district levels to train AWWs at the cluster level in the 10 blocks.

  • Building training capacity to provide role appropriate training to CDPOs at the state level.
